About me and the site
Hey, I’m Grayson.
This is the current iteration of a website to share thoughts, links to content I have found, and anything else I tack on. I speak to my motivations in the first bit of writing on this site.
Extended bio
Born in the early 1990s. Currently residing in the US state of Texas since 2010 alongside my wife. I grew up in New England (northeastern United States) before moving to Texas. Professionally I work in technology with a focus on information security, privacy, and related topics.
Growing up I spent my time split between the woods or the ocean regardless of the season and a behind a computer screen. A mountain bike and a fireroad 1 provided endless opportunities as did the internet and learning how computers worked. Being surrounded by trees in the middle of snowfall remains one of my favorite places to be. One day I will have that small house in the middle of a forest where I hack away on firewood and some computer related project.
I have a degree in Agriculture Technology which provided a well rounded baseline of knowledge on animal science 2, rangeland management 3, agriculture business management, and related topics. All with hands on experiences and the added focus of how technology applies to those topics. Technology being defined in the broadest sense of everything from conceptual knowledge, physical tools, machines, software, etc. My formal education concluded alongside a severe drought in Texas and I ended up working in technology instead of agriculture. In some ways I am caught between worlds. Living on the edge of the barren landscapes of west Texas and the greater American southwest all while having gigabit internet. Pretty weird experience which I am reminded of daily.
Interests and projects
- Reading - Research papers, books, etc.
- Photography - Mostly digital these days. Documentary style, occasionally something artsy. Rediscovery the enjoyment I once had for photography.
- Guitar - I’m not good, but I noodle occasionally on both acoustic and electric.
- Music - From sunup to sundown. Rock, metal, blues, jazz, soul, and everything else. My playlists are all over the place.
- Nature & conservation - Being outside, conservation, mountain biking. Mountain Gazette 4 is awesome. Aldo Leopold 5 and his writings remain a common read.
- Technology - Self hosting, information security, privacy, local first, blogging, digital gardening 6. I don’t remember where I first heard about this concept. I enjoy reading other’s digital gardens.
- Analog and physical goods - Pens, paper, notebooks, etc. My handwriting remains horrible, but I love physical goods both pen and paper related and otherwise.
- Function over form - Well designed does not always mean style over or functionality.
